54th Strategic Signal Battalion
By Spc. Ryan Swanson, U.S. Army Central
CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – Army Lt. Col. Jonathan A Gendron, the incoming battalion commander for the 54th Strategic Signal Battalion, assumed command from Lt. Col. Joseph N. Gardner, the outgoing battalion commander, during a change of command ceremony at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, Oct. 4.
After the ceremony, Gendron highlighted the importance of strong leadership in a world facing growing and asymmetrical threats.
"I am looking forward to taking care of Soldiers, by making sure that we are supporting our forces here," Gendron said.
The 54th's primary mission is the planning, engineering, installation, maintenance, and defense of the Army's portion of the Department of Defense Information Network in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
Soldiers assigned to signal battalions maintain radio, satellite and other telecommunication devices in theater and ensure interoperability between various technical platforms.
"It is absolutely critical because we won't be able to do anything if we can't talk to each other.” Gendron said. “We have to have communication support to make it all work.”
Gendron previously deployed three times to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve. Originally from New Hampshire, he was commissioned as a signal officer in 2002 after graduating from Norwich University with a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice.
