SAN FRANCISCO (NNS) -- San Francisco Fleet Week (SFFW) 2019 came to an end Oct. 13 after thousands of locals and visitors came to interact with 2,300 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, Airmen and Coast Guardsmen participating in the week-long event.
“For 39 years we have been honored to host this opportunity to bring the incredible men and women of our military,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed. “From the Navy to the Coast Guard to the Marines, having you here in San Francisco is an absolute pleasure.”
The seven-day event allowed attendees to tour the guided-missile destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), the guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton (CG 59), the littoral combat ship USS Charleston (LCS 18), and the amphibious transport dock ship USS Somerset (LPD 25). SFFW also included performances by the Navy’s flight demonstration team the Blue Angels, the Navy’s parachute team the Leap Frogs, Navy Band Southwest, and also included a parade of ships sailing through the San Francisco Bay.
“It’s an opportunity for us to introduce to you our incredibly talented and hardworking Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen and show off our state-of-the-art equipment these young professionals maintain and operate every single day around the world,” said Rear Adm. John E. Gumbleton, commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 3.
Throughout the week, hundreds service members participated in community relations events throughout the week including feeding the homeless, volunteering at local food banks and visiting hospitals. Crews from all ships hosted public ship tours and enjoyed the hospitality of San Francisco and its surrounding areas.
SFFW is an opportunity for the American public to meet their Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard teams and experience America's sea services.
