VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Rear Adm. Danelle Barrett, director of the Navy Cyber Security Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, visited and spoke with students attending the Information Professional Basic and Naval Officer Intelligence Basic courses offered by Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach, Oct. 10.

The Information Professional Basic Course provides new information professional officers (IP) with a fundamental knowledge of the IP community and the IP's role within the Navy. It provides the foundational skills that will enable them to develop, communicate, and promote innovative solutions and introduces the values that guide the IP Community. The Naval Officer Intelligence Basic Course provides new-accession and lateral-transfer Navy officers, designated as restricted line, with the knowledge and skills to perform as first tour intelligence officers in operational fleet assignments.

During her discussion, Barrett challenged the audience to consider how rapid technological developments that have already affected the civilian world and how it will change the warfighting environment over the next decade. She spoke at length regarding technical aspects of artificial intelligence, data standardization, the use of shared commercial / military infrastructure, and commercial cloud programs.

"It was a privilege to be able to talk to the future of the information warfare community, and we’re looking forward to the ideas they’re going to come up with,” shared Barrett.

In the lively discussion following her presentation, Barrett fielded questions from students and provided mentoring for the new information warfare professionals. She captivated the audience with colorful sea stories from her accomplished career.

“Rear Adm. Barrett’s focus on rapid modernization and leadership by building consensus was really inspirational,” said Ensign Ryan Richardson, a participating student who expressed his appreciation for the admiral’s lecture. “I am sorry we won’t have the opportunity to work under her prior to her retirement.”

“My personal thanks to Rear Adm. Barrett for taking the time out of her busy schedule to speak with our students today,” said Lt. Cmdr. Brielle Adamovich, executive officer of IWTC Virginia Beach. “Exposure to her leadership and mentorship is a fantastic opportunity that will greatly benefit our Sailors as they head out to the fleet. Always an engaging and entertaining speaker, she has a true knack for communicating the complexity of cyberspace operations and the role we play across all of our communities.”
