ANSBACH, Germany (October 17, 2019) – The Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program recently built an internet café for students at the U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach Elementary School.
They assembled desks, set up computers and spent time interacting with students.
“As Community Service is one of our three pillars of BOSS, we strive to play an integral role in helping our community by giving back as much as we can,” said Private 1st Class Darren Morgan, BOSS president. “We also strive to build bonds with our citizens to include our Host Nation neighbors of USAG Ansbach.”
Morgan first reached out to Ansbach Elementary School to coordinate volunteer efforts for the BOSS program, but has now established a lasting partnership.
“We are determined to be a respectable group that people can look up to when it comes to giving back while reaffirming ourselves as the ‘BEST Hometown in Europe’,” Morgan said.
Volunteers included Spc. Priya Loften, 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment; Sgt. Kevesha Cooke, Sgt. Gregory Hall, Sgt. Marley Lindo and Sgt. Yohance Dawson, of 1-3rd Attack Reconnaissance Battalion; and Command Sgt. Maj. Philson Tavernier, USAG Ansbach.
“Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers at USAG Ansbach provides a platform for all our single Soldiers to include our rotational forces, to voice their concerns with regard to Quality of Life improvements throughout our community,” said Tavernier. “It allows our single Soldiers to be creative and think outside the box to plan and execute historical trips, and life skills workshops while establishing new networks.
Tavernier said he truly believes that Soldiers involved in the BOSS program are more resilient and energized to actively engage in vital community projects.
Upcoming events
BOSS is scheduled to volunteer Oct. 28-31 during the Ansbach Elementary School’s Red Ribbon Week. They will help with the school’s parade and work with students to decorate doors for the door decorating contest.

A Life skills event is scheduled for Jan. 4. Soldiers will have the opportunity to learn how to ski and snowboard during a day trip to the Winklmoos-Steinplatte Ski Resort. What is BOSS?
BOSS has 74 communities Army-wide and is founded on three Pillars: Recreation and Leisure, Quality of Life, and Community Service. The BOSS mission is to enhance the morale and welfare of single Soldiers, increase retention and sustain combat readiness. It serves as the collective voice of single Soldiers through the chain of command, which serves as a tool for commanders to gauge the morale of single Soldiers regarding quality of life issues.
BOSS sponsors a variety of activities before, during and after deployment to maintain the morale of single Soldiers affected by increased operational tempo and deployment stress. It affords Soldiers the opportunity to assist in planning and execution of recreational activities for single Soldiers and provides direction for Soldiers interested in performing military and civilian community service-related projects. The BOSS program also serves as a tool to address many of the issues and concerns that our Army faces today. The program gives the Army the ability to tackle tough issues through peer to peer leadership.
