Nearly 50 Tulsa-based future Sailors from Navy Recruiting District Dallas took part in an enlistment ceremony during the University of Tulsa and United States Naval Academy football game, Oct. 12 at Tulsa’s H.A. Chapman Stadium.

Retired Navy Rear Adm. Greg J. Slavonic, 18th United States Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, administered the oath of enlistment during halftime of the game, and remained the future Sailors of the importance of the enlistment oath to always take time to reflect on the experiences that service in the Navy brings.

“You are entering an all-volunteer Navy, and your commitment is commendable,” said Slavonic during a meeting with the group of future Sailors before the game. “This is an important commitment, and you need to always be mindful of the experiences that you will have in the Navy.”

For future Sailor Jacob Rampy, a 2019 graduate of Charles Page High School who enlisted in the Navy as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate, the opportunity to participate in the public ceremony was a once in a lifetime experience.

“I felt very proud and excited to be out there in the middle of the field at halftime,” said Rampy. “We literally had thousands of people cheering and clapping for us, and our service. It was an event I’ll never forget, and it was an honor to have such an important person in the Navy read us our oath.”

Rampy, who leaves for Recruit Training Command (RTC) at the end of the month and is currently serving as a recruit chief petty officer of his peers in the Delayed Entry Program, says the opportunity to participate in the halftime ceremony was exciting, motivating, and helped to solidify his commitment to the Navy.

“I’m excited and ready to ship,” said Rampy of his upcoming ship date to RTC. “Swearing in on the field in front of all those people was heartwarming and inspired a pride in me that I’ll never forget.”

Recruiters and representatives also hosted a community outreach booth before the game and gave the future Sailors an opportunity to meet with members of the local community and share with others their experiences while preparing to leave for recruit training.

Slavonic maintains deep ties to Oklahoma and was in Tulsa as part of a Navy Executive Outreach Visit (EEV). He was raised in Oklahoma City, and is a graduate of both Oklahoma State University and the University of Central Oklahoma. EEV’s, managed by Navy Office of Community Outreach, are two-day outreach visits performed by Navy Flag Officers and members of the Senior Executive Service. The visits are comprised of engagements with corporate executives, government officials, education leaders, local media, veterans’ organizations, and civic groups.

Navy Recruiting District Dallas encompasses 150,000 square miles through Northwest Texas and Oklahoma and is committed to providing active and reserve opportunities to qualified candidates.
