    Naval Hospital Jacksonville

Naval Hospital Jacksonville (including its five branch health clinics) is conducting mass vaccinations of active-duty personnel and health care workers aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Naval Air Station Key West, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, and Naval Station Mayport.

These mass vaccinations exercise the command’s pandemic flu vaccination plan, and provide the required flu vaccine to both active-duty and medical personnel aboard the installations.

“The ability to quickly vaccinate the warfighter as well as our staff, in case of a serious outbreak of a disease like influenza, is an essential part of what we do to deliver a medically ready force and a ready medical force,” said Capt. Matthew Case, Naval Hospital Jacksonville commander and Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Jacksonville commanding officer.

Vaccinations for active-duty aboard NAS Jacksonville took place at a hangar at the flight line on Oct. 22 and 23. Vaccinations for hospital and clinic staff and the installation’s first responders occurred at the hospital on Oct. 9 and 10. Health care workers get vaccinated, in order to avoid catching influenza from a patient or spreading influenza to patients, in alignment with guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“We’re sharpening our quick-response capabilities for any vaccine-preventable disease,” observed Cmdr. Jennifer Wallinger, public health director at Naval Hospital Jacksonville and Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Jacksonville.

Vaccination is the first and most important step in protecting against the flu. The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone age six months and older, with rare exceptions. Flu vaccine is required for active-duty military personnel, selected reserves, and health care workers. To learn more about flu vaccine, visit www.cdc.gov/flu.

Families and retirees should check NH Jacksonville’s Facebook page, which will post something as soon as flu shots are available at the hospital and branch health clinics. When flu vaccine is aboard, NH Jacksonville’s Facebook will advise that patients can walk-in to the hospital’s Immunizations Clinic on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.; or Thursday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Currently, the hospital has the flu vaccine that’s formulated for children age 6 months to 35 months, and no other age groups. For more information, call Immunizations at 904-542-7810 (hospital) or 904-546-7050 (BHC Jacksonville, for active duty).
