FORT BELVOIR, Va. – The 1st Information Operations (IO) Command (Land) hosted a Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) Induction ceremony for 14 new NCOs from U.S. Army Cyber (ARCYBER) Command and 1st IO Command (Land) at the Thurman Hall Auditorium, Oct. 18.
The purpose of the Army NCO Induction ceremony is to celebrate the transition from a Soldier to a leader as they join the ranks of the professional NCO corps. The Induction allows fellow NCOs in a unit to form a cohesive bond and support leadership development. Senior NCOs convey to newly promoted sergeants the special pride and sense of esteem felt when a young Soldier enters the NCO Corps.
Command Sgt. Maj. John Cuevas, command sergeant major, 1st IO Battalion, 1st IO Command, served as the master of ceremonies and gave the opening remarks.
“I would like to congratulate all the newly inducted noncommissioned officers (NCOs). I am truly honored to have been selected to serve as the master of ceremonies for the 1st Information Operations Command NCO Induction Ceremony,” said Cuevas. “This is more than a pay raise, because with greater rank comes greater responsibility.”
As Cuevas concluded his remarks, he congratulated all the new NCOs and wished them success as they progress through the NCO ranks.
Three senior NCOs representing the NCO corps of the past, present, and future lit candles displayed behind wooden letters “N,” “C,” and “O.” A red candle represented the bloodshed by countless men and women throughout our history, a white candle represents the purity and innocence of America’s sons and daughters, and a blue candle represents valor and victory.
Guest speaker, retired Command Sgt. Maj. David Little, a former command sergeant major for 1st IO Command, provided his insight on tradition and responsibility to the new leaders.
“I believe it’s absolutely important to remember and continue traditions and which made our military and our Army, the premier fighting force in the world,” said Little. “This ceremony is one of those proud traditions; it is a defining moment, formally marking the transition from junior Soldier to leader, from self to selfless in thoughts, concerns duties and responsibilities.”
“You are part of a new’ them’ – the leadership,” said Little. “You are responsible for interpreting and enthusiastically carrying out legal orders and instructions. You are responsible for leading your Soldiers, ensuring they adhere to standards. You will also be responsible for them, for what they do, or fail to do. How you lead Soldiers will carry on with them throughout their careers. If you do it right, they will remember you for the rest of their lives and credit you for their successes. If you do it poorly, they will definitely remember you and use you as an example of how not to lead Soldiers.”
Little reminded the inductees they are entrusted with the honor and responsibility of leading Soldiers, and the rank they wear is not only for themselves but for the people they lead.
All of the inductees’ were introduced as they walked through the NCO archway, signifying their transition from junior enlisted to the NCO corp.
