FORT HOOD, Texas—While none of the Saegert Elementary School students were around during the time of 9/11, they wanted to “celebrate freedom” and “honor heroes” as they marched around their school with teachers, parents and Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center Soldiers during the school’s annual Freedom Walk September 11.
The Walk commemorates Patriot Day, the National Day of Service and Remembrance, which is held each year in memory of the people killed in the attacks of September 11, 2001.
Principal Eli Lopez said her staff talks to the students about the meaning of the day’s events and the impact it made on our nation.
“We talk some of the tragedy of the day, but mostly we focus on how our country came together and the heroic efforts of all the Soldiers, police, first responders and the sacrifices they make for our freedom,” Lopez said. “We are really appreciative of the CRDAMC Soldiers who come out to support us as they have such a positive impact on our students and serve as role models. We want our students to know what it means to be a hero and to see themselves as heroes.”
Saegert Elementary is CRDAMC’s adopted school and the hospital’s Soldiers support the school by participating in different events, providing tutoring and offering educational classes and training for students and parents, too.
