TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. - Col. Matthew Jones assumed command of the 101st Air and Space Operations Group during a ceremony, October 25 held on the 601st Air Operations Center’s Operations Floor.

During the ceremony, an age-old military tradition of passing of flags symbolized the leadership change as Col. Jones assumed command of the 101st AOG. Col. Michael Valle, Assistant Adjutant General-Air and Florida Air National Guard commander, presided over the ceremony.

“I can’t think of a better leader than Colonel Jones to lead the men and women of the 101st AOG to new heights,” said Valle. “The AOC has had a trying year in the wake of Hurricane Michael, as we have rebuilt homes and buildings all while accomplishing the 24-7 no-fail mission. Colonel Jones played a vital role ensuring the mission never faltered and took care of our most valuable asset, our people. I know his unwavering dedication to the men and women of the 101st AOG and to the mission will ensure the continued success of America’s AOC.”

Prior to becoming the 101st AOG commander, Jones served in nine different positions at the 601st Air Operations Center, including the Chief of the Combat Operations Division, a Chief of Combat Operations, and Deputy Chief of the Strategy Division.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be standing in front of all of you today assuming command of such an amazing organization that is the 101st AOG,” said Jones. “To the men and women of the AOG, you are the heart of the AOC, the world class professionals that defend our great nation around the clock from aerial attack, and I look forward to serving you in the role as commander.”

The 101st AOG is a Florida Air National Guard unit that provides forces to the 601st AOC to fulfill its critical mission of defending the homeland. The 101st AOG was officially activated July 1, 2009.

The 601st AOC is responsible for detecting, deterring, defending and if necessary, defeating any aviation threat to the citizens of the continental United States and to U.S. critical infrastructure.
