RAF LAKENHEATH, United Kingdom -- Spouses in specialized career fields often sacrifice job history and work experience due to recertification requirements after a Permanent Change of Station. Starting Oct. 22, 2019, the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust opened its doors to more opportunities for dependents who are registered nurses from RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall.

“There is a massive pool of highly trained and skilled personnel that are spouses. Wouldn’t it be great to use some of that knowledge in the local healthcare system?” said Paul Morris, WSFT Deputy Chief Nurse and 48th Medical Group Honorary Commander. “We have so far interviewed and given conditional offers to 11 candidates, with a further three candidates in the pipeline.”

Stemming from the long-standing partnership between the United Kingdom’s National Health Service and the 48th Fighter Wing, West Suffolk Hospital interviewed Liberty Wing spouses interested in gaining support with the recertification training required to fill positions in UK nursing rotations.

“The program is targeted for those dependents who are already registered nurses to acquire the training and information needed to apply and test for the certification here, thus allowing them to work to their full scope of practice here in the U.K.,” said Col. Jeanine Hatfield, 48th Medical Group chief nurse.

If accepted, the hospital’s program will guide and fund U.S. Air Force dependents stationed in the UK through the recertification process.
“The Nursing Midwifery Council has competence tests which need to be passed before UK registration can be achieved,” said Morris. “Seeing them come out the other side will be quite the special moment. They’ll have done an awful lot of work, and their career opportunities will have started again in the UK.”

The partnership between the NHS and the Liberty Wing has continued to evolve and deliver positive outcomes for both organizations.
“If we’re sharing our best practices and skills,” said Morris, “The community we serve is only going to benefit.”
