Brig. Gen. Mark S. Bennett took command of the U.S. Army Financial Management Command during a special ceremony at the Indiana War Memorial Oct. 25.
Under Bennett’s direction, the command will serve as the lead for financial operations for the Army across the globe, provide functional management of Army accounting systems and serve as the primary unit working to standardize Army business management processes, which leads to greater efficiency and effectiveness in managing Army resources.
“I promise to give you my very best and care about the entire USAFMCOM team and their families,” said Bennett shortly after taking command. “All I ask is that you care enough to give this command your best.”
Gen. Gustave F. Perna, U.S. Army Materiel Command commanding general, presided over the ceremony, which was the first formal event for USAFMCOM since it was realigned under AMC at the beginning of this month.
“There’s and old saying that, ‘the only constant is change,’ and you’ve witnessed that change today,” said Perna. “And, this (change) comes as part of a larger change for the entire command.”
“From being a direct reporting unit to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Financial Management and Comptroller to reporting to the commanding general of Army Materiel Command, your mission remains enormous and important to our Army,” he added.
USAFMCOM’s mission is to conduct enterprise-level financial operations and provide technical coordination for finance and comptroller units and commands across the Army in order to ensure the effective implementation of policies and programs to support, optimally resourcing the Army.
According to USAFMCOM leadership, the realignment under AMC fully nests finance and comptroller support within the sustainment warfighting function as USAFMCOM continues to serve as the Army’s focal point for all finance, comptroller, accounting and audit support operations.
That change will also facilitate multi-domain operations and extend USAFMCOM’s operational and technical expertise to enhance the Army’s audit and fiscal stewardship efforts.
Prior to this assignment, Bennett served as the director of resource management (G8) for the Headquarters, U.S. Army Installation Management Command. Throughout his 29 years of service, Bennett served in a variety of tactical, operational and strategic assignments.
Bennett took command from Maj. Gen. David C. Coburn, who had led the unit since March 2016. Coburn, the highest ranking service member stationed in Indiana, retired in a ceremony after the event, bringing his 37-year military career to a close.
