U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. James Slife, Air Force Special Operations Command commander, and AFSOC Command Chief Master Sgt. Cory Olson visited the 352nd Special Operations Wing at RAF Mildenhall, England, Nov. 4 and 5, 2019.
Slife, who took command in June, and Olson, his command chief, visited the wing on their tour of special operations units across the Air Force.
The pair toured base facilities, visited with the command team and engaged with both enlisted and officers of the 352nd SOW.
The new AFSOC commander spoke at an officer call at the base theatre about the importance of remaining open-minded when serving in a leadership position.
“Even the smartest person in the room is never as smart as everyone in the room,” said Slife. “We, as leaders, need to welcome diverse thought, differing perspectives and varying experience when solving our organizational challenges.”
Slife also highlighted the value of developing individuals capable of leading in a joint environment. Although he noted that AFSOC already does a good job of this, he reiterated that it still has much to learn from other organizations in the United States Special Operations Command.
During an enlisted personal development call, the AFSOC Chief emphasized the need for the Air Force to remain cutting edge and cast off ineffective processes not fit for a 21st century warfighting organization.
“Build the force you need for the future, not the one you grew up in,” he declared.
