Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain announced the selection of Master-at-Arms 1st Class Paul Wilson as Senior Sailor of the Year (SOY), Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Kourtney Reese as Junior SOY, and Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Sarah Imperati as Blue Jacket SOY at awards quarters Oct. 29.
NSA Bahrain also announced Wilson as the Senior Sailor of the Quarter (SOQ), Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Benjamin Floyd as Junior SOQ, and Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Miranda Hill as Blue Jacket SOQ.
"SOY and SOQ are excellent opportunities to select the best of the best of your Sailors," said Master Chief Petty Officer Michael Latimer, command master chief, NSA Bahrain. "They’re helping the command and enterprise get better in the Navy, and it’s a great opportunity to get the Sailors recognized."
Latimer went on to lend advice to future winners.
"Continue to work hard, your chain of command notices what you’re doing," said Latimer. “Your job is always first, but you have to understand that you have to step outside to volunteer and help in the community as well.”
Wilson thanked his support system for their help in him attaining this achievement.
“All of whom were nominated for this honor earned their place,” said Wilson. “This is just as much my wife’s and daughter’s win as it is mine. I was also fortunate to have outstanding mentors during my tour here who helped guide and mold me into being the best version of myself.”
Wilson praised leadership up and down the chain of command for assisting on his journey.
“It’s an absolute honor to be selected as the Sailor of the Year. I have never won Sailor of the Quarter or Sailor of the Year before, and to do it at the Navy’s largest security force fills me with nothing but pride and excitement,” said Wilson. “Stay focused, get a mentor who will challenge you and who you are striving to be like, and just keep the press… nothing is too hard to obtain.”
All of the winners will now go on to the next level of competition at Navy Region Europe, Africa, Central.
The Navy's SOY program was initially established in 1972 and modified throughout the years to include the Navy Enlisted Reservist of the Year (inactive). The program recognizes one Sailor from each command who demonstrates sustained superior performance, proven leadership, outstanding professionalism, and dedication to self-improvement.
NSA Bahrain enables the forward operations and responsiveness of U.S. and allied forces in support of Navy Region Europe, Africa and Central’s mission to provide services to the fleet, warfighter and family.
