INDIAN OCEAN – Aboard the Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship USS Germantown (LSD 42) Sailors and Marines, from the ship and the embarked 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, come together to enjoy a robust, “workout of the day” while deployed in the U.S. 7th Fleet.
“The work out of the day is high-intensity workout training, that can range from solo workout to partner workout, or you can scale it depending on your physical level,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Tiara Monroe, work out of the day coordinator. “It can entail any type of exercise anyone is willing to create to include equipment.”
One benefit of the workout of the day is being able to get Sailors and Marines together during the busy underway periods. Monroe adds that anyone can participate and anyone can contribute to the workout sessions.
“I like to work out so its motivating to me,” said Chief Personnel Specialist Melisa Colon. “I like the fact that in a group everybody is pushing each other, so it is not a one person session. It is pushing that cohesiveness together and that is motivating to me.”
We can get so caught up in the turn and burn of the ship’s everyday flow, but these quick training sessions allow us to come out, see other people and de-stress from the day said Monroe.
“The Workout of the Day is important because it gives everyone the chance to come out, congregate, actually get a good work out in so you can wind down from the busyness of the day,” said Monroe.
The exercise is typically held on the flight deck or vehicle turning area three-times a week. Although the workout of the day can include equipment, Monroe typically plans body weight workouts to use as least equipment as possible due to some of the constraints being deployed.
“It is a good way to build more camaraderie between the ship and the Marines,” said 1st. Sgt. Dustin Sammons. “Marines love to work out so this is good venue for us to meet and greet without having to do it with work. It is a time to work out with fellow service members and it breeds a little bit of good competition.”
Germantown, part of Commander, Amphibious Squadron 11, is deployed to the Indo-Pacific region to enhance interoperability with partners and serve as a ready-response force for any type of contingency.
