USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) leaders and crew were recently awarded the 2018 Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) Excellence Award during an onboard ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk.

Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic (SURFLANT), Rear Adm. Roy I. Kitchener, presented the award to the crew of the Arleigh Burke-class, guided-missile destroyer Oct. 24.

The award is annually presented to the Atlantic Fleet ship that excelled in CIWS operations and maintenance practices throughout the fiscal year. The MK-15 Phalanx is a fast reaction, 20mm gun system used for short range defense against aircraft and missiles. The gun, an agile forceful backup, is able to fire more than 3,000 rounds per minute and can automatically search, detect, track, and engage targets.

Fire Controlman 2nd Class Daniel Keyes and Fire Controlman 2nd Class Alexis Suarez were the two Sailors who spearheaded the countless hours and hard work completed on the CIWS mounts.

“Throughout our deployment, we had to work many hours in the hot sun, but we took pride in keeping our CIWS operational and ready to fight,” said Keyes.

The award consists of a brass plaque engraved with the names of Jason Dunham’s CIWS fire controlmen and a plaque with the ship’s name.

"It's always a great day when our Sailors receive recognition for their hard work and accomplishments,” said Cmdr. Morgan Roberts, Jason Dunham commanding officer. “Being presented this award is an honor and represents the dedication and tenacity of each Sailor onboard."

While aboard for the award presentation, Kitchener toured the ship’s Combat Information Center, CIWS platform, gas turbine module uptakes, and Main Engine Room 2. He then gave Sailors the opportunity to ask manning, training, and equipment questions, during an All Hands Call.

USS Jason Dunham (DDG-109) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the United States Navy. She is named after U.S. Marine Corps corporal Jason Dunham, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for service in the Iraq War.
