LISBON, Portugal (NNS) – Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO), completed Trident Jupiter while underway aboard the Blue Ridge-class command and control ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), Nov. 14, 2019.
STRIKFORNATO embarked Mount Whitney to certify as a NATO Expanded Task Force Commander during exercise Trident Jupiter. The exercise served to train and evaluate the staff’s ability to command and control high-end joint warfare operations.
“Over the last two weeks, the staff of STRIKFORNATO demonstrated their ability to plan dynamic warfare operations,” said Royal Navy Rear Adm. Guy Robinson, deputy commander, STRIKFORNATO. “Our ability to work through a highly challenging scenario shows the interoperability and strength of our NATO Alliance to protect and defend.”
Trident Jupiter brought Allied Nations together to practice, demonstrate, and assess their ability to share common tactical pictures, share situational awareness, conduct NATO-level mission planning and engagement coordination, and exercise force-level responses.
“The diverse culture and experience of our multinational staff challenges conventional thought processes to ensure we provide the best solutions to dynamic regional and global problems,” said Portuguese Lt. Ivone Carapeta “This scenario challenged the assumptions and plans of our staff; we rose to the challenge.”
The largest and most complex exercise of this type to date, Trident Jupiter 2019 is based upon a NATO Article 5, Joint Operations scenario created and developed by the NATO Joint Warfare Center (JWC).
STRIKFORNATO, headquartered in Lisbon, Portugal, is a rapidly deployable headquarters that provides scalable command and control across the full spectrum of the Alliance’s fundamental security tasks. As part of that mission, STRIKFORNATO is responsible for integrating naval, carrier, and amphibious forces into NATO operations.
Mount Whitney, commissioned on Jan. 16, 1971, is the U.S. 6th Fleet flagship. Homeported in Gaeta, Italy, the ship operates with a combined crew of U.S. Sailors and Military Sealift Command civil service mariners.
