WEIDEN, Germany – Members from the U.S. Army Health Clinic Grafenwoehr recently visited the Integrierte Leitstelle (ILS) Nordoberpfalz and Medbo Bezirksklinikum Woellershof as part of their host nation key leader engagement, Sept. 16, 2019.

The day began with a morning visit to the ILS Nordoberpflaz.

Lt. Col. Avery Carney, commander of USAHC Grafenwoehr, and his clinic staff team were welcomed by Juergen Meyer, chief of ILS Nordoberpflaz. Meyer provided the group a facility tour that focused on key aspects of the organization's operations, to include ground and air ambulance service dispatch, ground ambulance, air ambulance centers and the emergency call system.

Touring ILS Nordoberpflaz helped the clinic staff team better understand the facility's medical evacuation and pre-hospitalization capabilities and services. The visit also helped the team understand how they can better integrate their systems to the common betterment of the teams and the communities they serve, said Carney.

Later on that day the clinic staff team visited Medbo Bezirksklinikum Woellershof, an inpatient psychiatric hospital. They were welcomed by the hospital's medical director, Dr. Markus Wittman, who provided them a tour.

The tour included a discussion of in-patient care of American patients, language barriers in dealing with psychological treatment, and behavioral health patients versus alcohol withdrawal patients. Medbo Bezirksklinikum Woellershof provides emergency psychiatric stabilization services for over 200 American soldiers and family members each year.

The topics of discussion were important for the clinic staff team to better understand and appreciate the hospital's system and services, while at the same time allow the clinic to work on improving its communication and care integration.

Clinic staff visits and key leader engagements help strengthen and expand the partnership between the military treatment facilities and host nation medical facilities while also ensuring military readiness.
