FEDERAL EMPLOYEE VIEWPOINT SURVEY RESULTS ARE OUT

The Department of Defense Office of Inspector General (DoD OIG)’s 2019 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS) results are out and paint a promising picture of continued improvement. In a November 12 e-mail announcing the results to the DoD OIG workforce, Principal Deputy Inspector General Glenn Fine celebrated the OIG’s continued improvement, but noted that there is still work to be done.

“This is not a ‘one and done’ effort,” he wrote. “We must continually seek to improve the DoD OIG. We will therefore analyze the scores to see where we can improve further and how we can sustain the progress reflected in these results.”

Since the DoD OIG established the Employee Engagement Council (EEC) in 2015, the group continues to play a key role in analyzing the FEVS results. Each year, EEC representatives from across the DoD OIG comb through the results from the nearly 100 questions included on the FEVS to discern themes and trends across the agency.

“The FEVS results provide critical feedback on employee perceptions of whether, and to what extent, conditions characterizing successful organizations are present in an organization, such as employee empowerment, adequate resources, timely recognition, teamwork, and value added training and development,” said EEC Lead Carol Mouzon. “By helping senior leaders analyze FEVS scores, the council is able to identify opportunities for improvement and recommend initiatives to address those areas.”

The EEC hopes to use the Employee Viewpoint Survey Analysis & Results Tool, or EVS ART, to gain even more insight from the survey results. Created by National Institute of Health (NIH) employees, EVS ART is an Excel-based tool designed to automate the analysis of FEVS results, allowing users to focus more time developing recommendations to address areas identified in the results. On November 12, NIH briefed the EEC on how to use the tool.

Over the next several weeks, EEC members will work together and within their components to identify areas of opportunity and develop initiatives to address those areas. The council will then present to Mr. Fine the recommended initiatives and discuss how they will benefit the OIG workforce.
