CAMP TAJI, Iraq - The first sergeants from the 419th Command Support Sustainment Battalion, Headquarters and Headquarters Company and the 10th Sustainment Brigade Troops Battalion's Bravo Company recently hosted a volleyball tournament at the court next to the Mudhouse.
It took a couple of days, but in the spirit of fun, teams were formed, emails went out, and calls were made to set this up.
On May 21, on a hot afternoon, eight teams were on a bracket sheet with two teams ready to play. Within minutes of the start of the volleyball tournament, a Soldier with the 4th Cavalry asked if they could be added to play against the other teams. Adding the 4th Cavalry team was a pivotal decision which changed the course of this whole tournament.
The first teams up to play were the "Gators" from the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 10th Sustainment Brigade Troops Battalion, and Bravo Company, also from the 10th Sustainment Brigade Troops Battalion. After a best-out-of-three match, and roughly an hour later, the Gators came out the victor. About an hour later, the 991st Transportation Company and the 1538th Transportation Company, both of the 419th, were next up to play in which the 1538th won. The 419th Combat Support Sustainment Brigade's, Headquarters and Headquarters Company and a second Bravo Company, played a match with 419th CSSB, HHC emerging as the victor.
The mood was all fun and games when the 4th Cavalry team took on the 776th Maintenance Company match came up.
This particular match showed off the 4ID's ability to spike, set, and block the volleyball. Needless to say, the 776th team had lots of trouble defending their turf and lost after only two matches in the best out of three. Darkness came and the blinding lights around the court came on.
The semi-finals featured the Gators against the 1538th TC, and the HHC, 419th took on the 4th Cavalry team. The 1538th TC's team battled a long match and eventually came out the winner. The 419th team struggled and lost to the 4th Cavalry after three matches.
The finals matchup with the 1538th and the 4th Cavalry featured the two teams playing a grueling, three matches with the 4th Cavalry team, once again, emerging victorious.
