DAHLGREN, Va. – The Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) recently announced the selection of its 2019 Junior Instructor of the Year (IOY).
Capt. Richie Enriquez, CSCS Unit (CSCSU) Great Lakes commanding officer, explains that Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Brittany Parker’s confidence, enthusiasm in the classroom, and noteworthy ability to communicate with the future of the Navy were key to her selection.
“BM2 Parker is a role model in and out of the classroom,” Enriquez said. “She not only trains the future of the Navy how to fight and to win, she is our student coordinator, Master Training Specialist directorate coordinator, Sexual Assault Prevention and Response advocate, and Morale, Welfare and Recreation secretary. She has a strong command presence.”
A native of Carthage, Texas, Parker instructs and mentors numerous junior Sailors.
“Instructors shape the future of our Navy,” she explained. “I provide students with not only rating specific knowledge, but also take extra time to answer all their questions about what to expect and how to become a better Sailor. My hope is that they are successful in the fleet and in turn, come back to the schoolhouse to train the future force.”
Parker, who served aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), has always enjoyed learning and sharing her knowledge.
“Before I joined the Navy, I was going to college to be a high school coach / teacher,” she explained. “I wanted to join the Marine Corps after high school but my parents really wanted me to go to college and play sports. So, I did that for a while but I was uncertain of my path in life. The only thing I did know is that I still wanted to join the military. Finally, after years of debating, I enlisted and do not regret it one bit.”
Her career goals are to go back overseas and become an officer.
Parker, who will now compete in the Naval Education and Training Command’s (NETC) junior category for IOY, is thrilled to represent CSCS and thanks her shipmates and wife for their endless support.
“Thank you to my chain of command for helping me build my foundation, Quartermaster 1st Class Khadedra Barber for guiding and pushing me, my fellow Boatswain’s Mates for answering all of my questions, and of course my wife, Selby, for always supporting me in all my career endeavors,” she said.
CSCS is a global organization of professional military and civilian educators and support personnel focused on training the Surface Navy to fight and win. CSCS trains over 36,000 U.S. and Allied Sailors a year to operate, maintain and employ weapons, sensors, communications, combat systems and deck equipment of surface warships to build Combat Ready Ships with Battle Minded Crews.
