FORT JACKSON, South Carolina -- Recently seven chaplains from the Canadian forces joined 35 US Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (USACAPOC) chaplains during an event held at the Religious Support Simulation Center at Fort Jackson on Nov. 14.
“Around 7 years ago, the USACAPOC(A) Chaplain Directorate noticed that the USACAPOC mission demanded more staff work and analysis from our chaplains due to the command’s unique mission,” said Maj. Joshua Morris, 350th Civil Affairs Command chaplain.
Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations chaplains are called on to advise commanders, acting as Family and Morale, Recreation and Welfare staff representatives during forward exercises.
To help support this initiative, Maj. Morris said that the USACAPOC(A) Chaplain Directorate reached out to Canadian chaplains due to their experience with their military’s Family and Morale, Recreation and Welfare mission.
“Over these past seven years USACAPOC has developed a relationship with the Canadian chaplains, learning from each other, sharing ideas and concepts has been key to learning how to think from an interoperability perspective,” said Maj. Morris. “The Canadian chaplains see Religious Support (RS) from a different perspective, so that helps both sides conceptualize the products and analysis from new angles.”
Building relationships with partner nations is the primary goal of the civil affairs, and Maj. Morris says that the hope is for the chaplains joint event is a model for other civil affairs commands to participate in similar events with other partner nations in the near future.
