The students of Pehleng Elementary School welcomed U.S. Navy Seabees deployed with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 5’s Detail Pohnpei with an opening ceremony for the renovations at their school, Nov. 7.
U.S. Navy Seabees are renovating four of the buildings on the Pehleng Elementary campus to provide the students a clean and safe environment to continue their education and strengthen the community’s relationship with the U.S. Navy Seabees, the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Pehleng Elementary School has over 270 students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
The opening ceremony consisted of an introduction of the U.S. Navy Seabees by Lt. j.g. Brian Wood, NMCB-5’s Detail Pohnpei officer in charge, followed by games, chalk drawings, and photos in the courtyard outside the main schoolhouse with the students.
“This and all of our projects are an opportunity to be here in Micronesia, to interact with the community, and to remind everybody what Seabees are capable of and what we love to do,” said Wood. “We love to build and interact with students and teachers and provide, for any community that we’re a part of, the benefits of our productive work. I think the best thing we bring to this and any other country we’re in is good, honest work that’s meaningful to the people of the community around us.”
The renovations to the schoolhouse will include three buildings on the campus. Two of the buildings are restroom facilities in need of repairs to the roof and toilets. The project will also include renovations to the main schoolhouse consisting of new flooring, ceiling repairs, replacement of partition walls between classrooms, and a new guardrail.
Robert Riley, U.S. Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia visited the school, toured the construction site, and spoke about the U.S. Navy Seabees’ future involvement in Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).
“What [the Seabees] are doing here is fantastic,” said Riley. “It’s really just exactly what they need, and this just helps to further strengthen our close partnership with the Federated States of Micronesia, and I look forward to a very long, close relationship with the FSM. I think if anything it’s getting even tighter.”
NMCB-5 is deployed across the Indo-Pacific region conducting high-quality construction to support U.S. and partner nations to strengthen partnerships, deter aggression, and enable expeditionary logistics and naval power projection. The battalion stands ready to support Humanitarian Aid/Disaster Relief and Major Combat Operations throughout the region.
