From Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet Public Affairs
Vice Adm. Richard Brown, Commander, Naval Surface Forces (CNSF), visited Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Nov. 3-6, as part of his waterfront engagement series.
During his trip to Hawaii, Brown toured guided-missile destroyer USS Preble (DDG 88) and guided-missile cruiser USS Port Royal (CG 73), conducted a surface warfare officer call, and a commanding officer roundtable.
“Everything we do is to build combat ready ships and battle-minded crews,” said Brown during the surface warfare officer call. “That means ships are materially sound, leaving no redundancy at the pier and crews ready to fight, win, and come home.”
The Hawaii visit is part of waterfront engagements by Brown. The engagements provide an opportunity for the fleet to engage with Brown, provide feedback, and ask questions about the vision for the Surface Force.
Earlier this year, Brown visited Sailors in Rota, Spain; Manama, Bahrain, and Mayport, Florida. Throughout his visits, Brown discussed efforts to build combat ready ships and battle-minded crews, while preparing for the high-end fight.
“We are the premier surface force in the world, second to none, that controls, succeeds, and provides combat naval power to our nation when and where it needs it,” Brown emphasized throughout his travels. “There is no other surface force that’s like us.”
The feedback from the waterfront engagements around the fleet has been positive.
“When he visited our ship, he was adamant about fixing the important issues, such as focusing on a warrior mindset and bringing back pride in the surface community,” said electrical officer Ensign Andrew Maus aboard USS Preble.
“We’ve got the best commanding officers in the world,” Brown said. “The way that we command in the United States Navy is different than any other navy. Not only do we have the best commanding officers in the world, we’ve got the best officers and we have the best crews. That’s why we’re the premier surface force. Hands down.”
The mission of CNSF is to man, train, and equip the Surface Force to provide fleet commanders with credible naval power to control the sea and project power when and when needed.
