Airmen from the 492nd Fighter Squadron joined efforts with local charities to spread Christmas cheer at the Duxford Children’s Christmas Party at the Duxford Imperial War Museum, England Dec. 14, 2019.
The 492nd Madhatter’s have carried on the Children’s Christmas Party tradition for the past 12 years.
“The party is an annual tradition that dates to World War II when kids were getting displaced out of London from all the bombings,” said Lt. Col. Bill Wooten, 492nd FS commander. “Airmen at the Duxford Airfield brought the children in and threw a big Christmas party.”
The Starlight Children’s Foundation, Bardet-Biedl Syndrome UK and Children's Burns Club charity organizations invited over 100 attendees to participate in the event. These organizations reach out to families with children who have serious or terminal illness, or with severe burns.
The event featured games, a Morse code lessons, pilot displays, and a visit from Father Christmas with a gift for each child.
“This event means a lot to me and my family because it is such a great atmosphere and place for the kids to relax and have fun,” said Gary Smith, attendee of the Christmas party. “It was an honor to be invited here another year.”
The Liberty Wing Airmen helped bring joy and happiness to children while strengthening partnerships with community members.
