SALEM, Ore. - The Oregon Army National Guard’s 1186th Military Police Company conducted National Guard Reaction Force (NGRF) training during their recent drill weekend of December 7 and 8, 2019 at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST), at Salem, Oregon, in preparation for their annual certification requirements.

For many of the Soldiers of the 1186th Military Police Company, “this was their first experience conducting this type of security training and also allowed others to refresh their skills and proficiency,” said Oregon Army National Guard 1st Sgt. Adrian Gonzalez.

“Soldiers were able to focus on-site security, roadblocks and checkpoints, civil disturbance control and personal security,” said Gonzalez. “This training is important in case the National Guard is needed in Oregon to perform riot control or respond to other civil disturbances.”

Gonzales is relativity new to the unit and along with the Company Commander Capt. Caleb Tomulty, the unit plans to incorporate more of this type of training in 2020.

“As our members prepare for their annual certification, training like this is a good head start in that process,” said Gonzalez.

Normally the Military Police (MP) members would have full riot control equipment on such as; body shields, body armor, shin guards, knee and elbow pads, and other specialized safety gear. In many ways it allowed members to understand the importance of having the right gear for personal protection and mission success.

“Army Guardsmen, in coordination with the Air Force (National Guard), have a piece of this NGRF package,” Gonzalez explained. “The intent is to have between 75 to 125 personnel ready to go and out the door within the first 8-hours during the initial call up, and within the first 24 hours an additional 375 members (Army and Air National Guard members combined) in place.”

In time, the unit’s goal is to have all Military Policemen assigned to the unit, trained to the NGRF standards and available to respond to the required time conditions.

“This is the intent, to get this citification next year,” said Gonzalez. “We are planning on doing the training in coordination with the Air Force at Camp Rilea (in Warrenton, Oregon) and build on the training we started over this past (December) drill period.”
