So you got orders to Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, North Carolina, congratulations!
Eastern North Carolina may not be the life of the party, but as the largest air station in the Marine Corps, MCAS Cherry Point is home to plenty of activities for service members and their families to enjoy no matter what your interests are.
“We endeavor to provide things to do for families, Marines and Sailors on this base,” said U.S. Marine Corps Col. Mikel Huber, the MCAS Cherry Point commanding officer.
Don’t believe us? That’s ok, let’s go down the list of some of the wonderful amenities here and you will see for yourself.
First, for anybody who loves the outdoors we have three ponds as well as numerous creeks to go fishing, kayaking or canoeing on– Cherry Point even has a recreational outdoors facility to rent equipment from, multiple hunting areas for both archery and rifle as well as an archery range, an RV park to camp at and a marina to park your boats. Cherry Point is also home to Devil Dog Dare, which includes rock climbing, zip lining, mountain biking, challenge rope course, rappelling and a 65-foot free fall that is open to all active duty service members. The paintball course is open to Department of Defense employees as well.
“The Devil Dog Dare is unique in the Marine Corps because we have a lot of different events the Marines can participate in,” said Justin Smith, the Devil Dog Dare manager. “Some of the other bases have some of the events we have, but they don’t have all the events.”
Not a big outdoors fan? How about some of our indoor activities such as the Single Marine Program, with a plethora of volunteer opportunities to help you give back to the local community. They also host trips to help you destress and unwind from work which is open to more than just single Marines. Cherry Point recently refurbished the Twin River movie theater, which is open to all with base access.
For all you athletes out there, don’t worry, we didn’t forget about you. Cherry Point has a new track and turf field as well as numerous other sports fields and courts including football, soccer, basketball, volleyball and tennis and an 18-hole golf course with a 24-hour driving range. Don’t know how to play? Don’t fret, the Sound of Freedom Golf Course boasts our very own Professional Golfers’ Association teaching pro on staff for beginner or advanced lessons. We also have an indoor and outdoor pool to help you maintain your amphibious heritage, two gyms with plenty of equipment to get your pump on; as well as plenty of biking and running trails to help keep you in shape. We also offer intramural and youth sports leagues open to all active duty service members and dependents to help foster a healthy competitive spirit.
Speaking of youth sports, the youth sports league at the Cherry Tree House is looking for volunteers to coach the teams, any rank is welcome from private all the way up to colonel and above, as well as dependents.
“We try to provide a kid friendly environment and we care about the development of the children,” said David Guthrie, the youth sports director. “We want them to learn the sport and to learn respect.”
Still not convinced? There are also plenty of fun activities a short distance from the air station to include numerous beaches, the historic Fort Macon State Park, the Croatan National Forest, skydiving, downtown New Bern with plenty of unique stores and restaurants, and historical Civil War sites just to name a few.
So don’t be dismayed, get out of your house or barracks room and explore your new home, trust us, you’ll enjoy it.
