Soldiers and Airmen from the Pennsylvania National Guard joined together to participate in Homeland Response Force Training at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania.
“We’re using these joint training opportunities to continue developing as a team while continuously improving our processes and procedures,” said Col. John Pippy, commander of the 55th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade and Homeland Response Force Region III.
This Homeland Response is part of Region III, or HRF Region III, and is a joint force of National Guard units from several different states including West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and more. For this exercise, it was only the PA portion of the HRF that worked through their battle drills and procedures.
The HRF training promotes cohesion among the two branches, along with several different states, and facilitates the integration of our Army and Airforce team members into a cohesive organization that is specially trained to provide to domestic support to civilian authorities at all levels of government.
“This training is focused on ensuring our team successfully responds to different exercise scenarios and challenges that we could face in real world scenarios,” said Pippy. “We train hard as a team to ensure that we are ready whenever our Commonwealth or Country needs us.”
During this scenario, the joint force worked together in a simulated environment to develop their procedures in preparation for evaluations and potential real-world scenarios in the future.
This mission operates quietly in the background and many Pennsylvanians do not even know what the HRF is, said Maj. Gen. Tony Carrelli, The Adjutant General of Pennsylvania, during his visit to the HRF training.
Throughout the several days of training, the staff was tested by varying scenarios that encouraged the different sections to coordinate and communicate to work through the issue. Such events required the staff to form working groups to develop plans to handle the situations.
“This is a high-stake mission,” said Carrelli. “And, you often have one shot in these types of scenarios.”
These training days were one of several scheduled for the service members part of the HRF Region III team and are part of the continued training for the element. As part of the HRF region III, the service members are tasked with travelling to different states to support their training and development to constantly improve the abilities of the HRF.
“Few folks woke up and went to work today,” said Carrelli. “Even fewer put on the uniform to serve – and I want to thank you.”
