FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. – The 55th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade’s mission is to provide area and maneuver support in recently gained territory.
In a real-world situation, the MEB’s mission is to move into a territory and provide added security and defense for other units while also enhancing the freedom of mobility for the organizations the MEB is supporting.
For Annual Training, the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 55th MEB, conducted a Rehearsal of Concept or ROC drill in preparation for movement like a real world scenario. With the concept of moving into an unknown area, the MEB leadership instructed and developed the understanding of the Soldiers of the HHC; including the execution of a quartering party.
The mission of the quartering party is finding an area that is secure and suitable to establish the tactical operations center, said Sgt. Maj. Larry Snyder, Operations Sergeant Major for the 55th MEB. “Three important tasks of the quartering party are: Security; Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and High-Yield Explosives; and Communications.”
After preparation for the movement and making sure that the important details of the plan – down to every passenger – the Soldiers mount their vehicles and the quartering party moves out.
Moving to the Assembly area is the first step. The quartering party directs the placement of the main body of the convoy to establish security. Once the convoy has secured the assembly area, the quartering party moves to the designated area to see if it is suitable for building the TOC. Checking for CBNRE, dangers, and other hazards, are tasks for the quartering party to set the area for the arrival of the main body.
Once accomplished, the quartering party communicates to the main body and calls them in by chalks. These chalks allow the quartering party to further provide 360-degree security for the area while the rest of the convoy arrives. Once on ground and the site is established, the construction of the TOC begins.
The teamwork and leadership of the HHC directed the establishment of the TOC, sleeping areas, and more, as the sun began to fade on this day of Annual Training. A lot of moving pieces are required to properly plan, prepare, move, and establish operations for the MEB.
“Annual Training is a great time to exercise and grow our skills,” said Col. John Pippy, commander of the 55th MEB. “We continually build on lessons learned in the past to improve our Mission Command capabilities.”
