Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 5 announced its 2019 Senior Sailor of the Year (SSOY), Sailor of the Year (SOY), Junior Sailor of the Year (JSOY), and Blue Jacket of the Year (BJOY) Dec. 18.

Builder 1st Class German Dunlop, Builder 1st Class Damon Lewis, Construction Mechanic 2nd Class Patrick Breckheimer, and Builder Constructionman Tristan Hieb were each selected.

“It's is an honor to be selected from a large group of extremely talented and dedicated leaders,” said Dunlop. “I am grateful for the opportunity and for all who played a part in getting me here. First of all, thanks to God for giving me the strength, thanks to my beautiful family who supports me, the junior Sailors who help me grow as a leader, and my leadership who trusts and empowers me on a daily basis. It's truly a humbling experience.”

Three of the four Sailors, Dunlop, Lewis, and Hieb, are currently deployed with NMCB-5’s Detail Marshall Islands where they are constructing an evacuation center that will serve as the island’s disaster preparedness building for the local community.

Breckheimer, the JSOY, is currently deployed to Okinawa, Japan, and has been the work center supervisor in the material liaison office and central tool room (MLO/CTR). He is in charge of maintenance for the entire battalion’s table of allowance—including six detail sites deployed across the region, building schools to support partnerships and constructing and maintaining facilities to support U.S. and allied forces.

“It wasn’t just me, it was all of [the Seabees] at MLO/CTR,” said Breckheimer. “We were able to work as team, and any of us had a fair shot it, honestly. I think we all put in a lot of work throughout homeport and deployment. We were working late, and everybody that was working with me really helped push me along. I couldn’t have done alone.”

NMCB-5 is deployed across the Indo-Pacific region conducting high-quality construction to support U.S. and partner nations to strengthen partnerships, deter aggression, and enable expeditionary logistics and naval power projection. The battalion stands ready to support Humanitarian Aid/Disaster Relief and Major Combat Operations throughout the region.
