CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Sergeant Maj. Lonnie N. Travis Jr. assumed responsibility as the senior enlisted leader of II Marine Expeditionary Force from Sgt. Maj. Richard D. Thresher during a relief and appointment ceremony at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Jan. 10, 2020.
Travis, a 28-year Marine veteran from Pinnacle, North Carolina, looks forward to serving in his new billet.
“I am focused on warfighting, everything that we do as a MEF must be geared toward making us better warfighters,” said Travis. “I am excited about joining the II MEF Team. I look forward to getting around to all the units and meeting the Marines and Sailors and learning what their unit does for our MEF.”
Thresher, a 29-year Marine veteran from Dallas, served as the II MEF sergeant major since December 2016. Following the ceremony, Thresher reflected on his time at II MEF and how the unit has grown as part of the Fleet Marine Force.
“Being able to see II MEF transition to a three-star warfighting organization has been very exciting and rewarding,” said Thresher. “I have really enjoyed watching the Marines, at all levels, attack this new mission with professionalism and enthusiasm. This tour has made me realize just how good our Marines are when given hard tasks and how much they care about being a U.S. Marine.”
Thresher will take over as the senior enlisted leader of U.S. Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany.
