U.S. Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia

The job of Command Career Counselor (CCC) is an important role to fill at any command, here on Diego Garcia that role is filled by Chief Navy Counselor Gary K. Coumbe.

Coumbe serves as an advocate for Sailors when it comes to Navy programs and policies.

A CCC is a link between Sailors, their commands, and supporting Navy organizations, including Navy Personnel Command (NPC). CCCs are also responsible for managing the command’s Career Development Program.

“I am the guidance counselor for Navy careers,” Coumbe says. “I can assist Sailors with continuing their Navy career, ending their Navy career, applying for special programs, converting to different jobs, applying to different duty stations and a lot more.”

While Coumbe is the only CCC assigned to Navy Support Facility (NSF) Diego Garcia, he is also the only CCC on the island. He often see service members from Diego Garcia’s tenant commands.

“Regardless of the command I am attached too, I am honored to assist every Sailor that asks,” Coumbe said. “And of course we cannot forget our Air Force brothers and sisters-in-arms that have some of the same requirements that the Navy does, and I assist them as well.”

One aspect of Coumbe’s job is meeting with Sailors for Career Development Boards (CDB). CDBs are to provide guidance to Sailors so that they can make informed career decisions.

“The amount of effort that Chief [Coumbe] puts into his job, shows that he cares about his job and his junior Sailors,” Air Traffic Controller Airman Apprentice Phillip Brunson said about his recent CDB with Coumbe.

Other Sailors are important to Coumbe, when asked when he likes most about the Navy, he responded, “The opportunity to serve with like-minded patriots is a true honor and the reason I continue to serve today.”

When he isn’t working, Coumbe has used his time here in Diego Garcia to enhance his physical fitness and fish. Laughing, he says he is quickly becoming one of the best fishermen on the island.

Coumbe’s job is essential to not just Diego Garcia, but to the Navy. He helps Sailors make the most of their careers so that each of them can work to improve in the Navy, Diego Garcia and everywhere else they go.

Coumbe wants these Sailors to know, “You don’t live once, you die once. You live everyday so make the most of each one of them.”
