Marine volunteers with the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, Single Marine Program (SMP) helped clean up debris during a volunteer event in Pollocksville, North Carolina, Jan. 15, 2020.
The Marines spent the day cleaning debris from yards and the roofs of houses that were impacted by severe flooding during Hurricane Florence.
“I appreciate having the Marines come out here and volunteer to make our town look better,” said Samuel Lincoln, a Pollocksville Beautification Board member and local resident.
Hurricane Florence was a powerful Category 4 hurricane that struck Eastern North Carolina in September 2018, and whose devastation is still being felt in the communities impacted by it.
This volunteer event is just one of many that the SMP hosts to give back to the surrounding communities.
“I heard about the damage the hurricane had on these communities and I thought it would be a great way to give back to the community,” said Lance Cpl. Sean Lee, a chemical, biological, radiation and nuclear defense specialist assigned to Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron-2. “Even if it’s just a couple of hours of work, when a lot of us get together you can see the positive impact we can have on the community.”
