Seabees of NMCB 24 Receive Many Thanks from Coalition Forces in Iraq

RAWAH, Iraq -- Iraq-Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 24 has detachments of Seabees stationed at U.S. Marine Corps and coalition force outposts throughout the Al Anbar province of Iraq, including Rawah. The mission of the Seabees is to provide camp maintenance that results in maintaining and improving the quality of life for military personnel residing in the area.

Recently personnel responsible for the assigned tasking at Rawah received letters of appreciation for a job very well done, from the Marines and Army in separate performances.

The first letter of appreciation was received by the command staff of NMCB 24 from the 2d Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, Communications Department. A two-man crew, consisting of Petty Officer 2nd Class James Robertson and Petty Officer 2nd Class Andreaz Miller, were applauded for their diligent work upgrading the generator and power capabilities to vital components of the camp.

1st Lt. Aaron E. Middleton, communications officer, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, advised that the Seabees, "...did this job in a positive, professional manner; they were always in a good mood trying to get the job done in a timely, yet thorough manner. They definitely exceeded my expectations."

The project itself involved upgrading a generator, supplying power to a communications center, as well as the installation of transformers, replacement of outlets, and the rewiring of the facility. The work conducted was completed in only a week.

Middleton further commended the crew regarding the money that will be saved by the fuel efficiency upgrades, as well as the increased functionality of the center as whole, stating, "I'm sure this is normal operations for these guys but I was very impressed by their proficiency, positive attitude, and timeliness."

The Seabees of Camp Rawah also received letters of appreciation from the Army's 320th Psychological Operations Company for work performed at the radio station in the nearby town at Anah, Iraq.

Petty Officer 1st Class Rocco Principe, Petty Officer 2nd Class James Robertson, Petty Officer 2nd Class Andreaz Miller, Petty Officer 2nd Class Arthur McCall Jr., and Petty Officer 2nd Class Richard Nolasco Jr., were applauded for the installation of additional outlets in the broadcasting room, which allowed the local broadcasters to install much needed extra equipment.

The crew also constructed an insulated enclosure for the station's generator, housed directly below the broadcasting room. Previously, the generator had caused an excessive echo across the radio waves each time the station transmitted to the local Iraqi people in the area.

The crew's professional and considerate performance not only strengthened the working relationship between the Seabees of NMCB 24 and other Coalition forces, but also the relationship with local residents.

Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 24 is headquartered in Huntsville, Ala. It is a reserve unit, with home detachments located in the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and West Virginia. NMCB 24 began its second deployment in the support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in the spring of 2009. Currently it is headquartered at Al Asad Air Base, Al Anbar province, Iraq.
