LAKE THAR-THAR, Iraq — Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 24, a Navy Reserve battalion deployed to Al-Asad, Iraq, recently completed the construction of a new boat ramp and access road at Lake Thar-Thar, Iraq. This mission was conducted for the Navy's active duty Riverine Boat Squadron, RIVRON 1, Detachment One, assigned to Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, located in Al-Taqaddum, Iraq.
NMCB 24 arrived at Lake Thar-Thar to begin construction on April 20 after convoying from Al Asad. The personnel of RIVRON had previously established the site's security.
NMCB 24's Alfa Company crew immediately started to unload the heavy equipment required to complete the scheduled tasking. The project supervisor, Senior Chief Petty Officer Jerry Carter II, coordinated the work crew. They assembled the berthing tents and unloaded the gear and rations necessary to live on site for the duration of the project.
Ensign Donald Bowen and Petty Officer 2nd Class Jayna Long utilized plans from the previous on-site assessment to stake out the access road and ramp to be constructed.
Once completed, Petty Officer 2nd Class Luke Rohleder and Tracy Wood proceeded to follow the direction of the engineering staff to remove the top layer of the area, allowing for the hard soil sub-base to be exposed.
The Seabees worked tirelessly while moving yards of cut and fill, as well as rock and clay, creating an access road, turn-around area, and boat launch ramp in a once vacant sandy lot.
The project originally estimated to take approximately eight days, was completed in almost half of the time allotted.
After the completion of the boat ramp, RIVRON performed a successful test launch of their high-speed Small Unit River Craft, leaving the entire team grateful and satisfied with the work performed.
"The Seabees did outstanding work here. I feel this project will ensure that this team will remain operational for this area." Stated Lt. jg. Erik Bazzle of RIVRON.
For the duration of the construction project, RIVRON 1, DET 1 personnel maintained vigilant security for the Seabees with true professionalism. The working relationship established between the two NECC units and the local Iraqi people proved that teamwork can succeed in any situation.
