KABUL, Afghanistan - NATO handed over the Role 2 Enhanced Medical Treatment Facility to International Security Assistance Force in a ceremony at Kabul International Airport July 1.
Centrally located in Kabul, the hospital will serve as the hub to transfer casualties throughout the theater. Its close proximity to the airfield ensures patients who arrive at KAIA can be quickly transferred for staging and stabilisation prior to onward movement.
The €15.5 million facility is the first to be NATO funded, designed and built. It is the culmination of more than three years of planning and construction and contains an emergency room, operating room and intensive care unit.
France will be the first nation to lead the hospital with Belgium, Portugal, Germany and Bulgaria contributing to the staff.
