CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan -- Members of the local and U.S. military communities attended the 2020 Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Tournament, at the Camp Foster Field House on Jan. 16-20.

The tournament brought the military community together for a fun-filled weekend to display their talents, participate in some friendly competition, and commemorate the life and achievements of Dr. King.

“With the tournament occurring on MLK weekend, it allows people from across Okinawa, from other islands and off base to come play a full game tournament with fun, smaller events within, “ said Taryn Miller, a sports specialist for Marine Corps Community Services Adult Sports. “The event provides camaraderie within the different branches and the local community.”

According to MCCS this is the biggest basketball tournament of the year. It is open to men and women teams from all over the Indo-Pacific.

Events included, a 3-point shootout, a skills competition and slam dunk contest. The top four teams in each pool then advanced to the double elimination tournament, and on to the championship games.

U.S. Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Elonzo Higginson, coach of the winning team, the Warriors, and a communications chief with 3rd Marine Division, shared a few words on how he felt winning the 2020 MLK Basketball Tournament alongside his team. “It feels phenomenal to win, and to be able to share this with the team at an MCCS event, feels wonderful.

The tournament pushed athletes to their limit with an opportunity to show it off on the court. MCCS brought the athletes a unique chance to compete and build relationships with other military members.

The mission of MCCS is to make Okinawa home by providing a premium yet cost-effective menu of Quality of Life programs and services designed to meet the needs of Marines and their families.
