Sailors assigned to Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Dallas paid tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by volunteering at the 38th annual MLK Day March and Parade held in Dallas, Jan. 20.
More than 250 entries from community organizations, nonprofits, drill teams and local bands took part in the mile-long parade which drew a crowd estimated between 100,000 to 250,000 spectators. Volunteers from NRD Dallas met with various community organizations and supported the day’s festivities by acting as spotters, aide station attendees, and parade route marshals.
“Today we are here to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with our 38th annual parade,” said Alesha Whibbey, volunteer coordinator for the City of Dallas Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. “As the volunteer coordinator I provide volunteers along the one-mile route to ensure that we have a safe and smooth process. We are expecting 100,000 to 250,000 people watching our parade. The sun is out, the people are here and we’re having an exciting parade this year.”
Noting the important role volunteers play in the festivities, Wibbey applauded the Sailors from NRD Dallas for coming out to support the parade.
“We absolutely need volunteers,” said Whibbey. “For 100,000 people or more to be able to safely watch the parade, we wouldn’t be able to do it without them. We need as much assistance as we can get every year, and we enjoy having the volunteers from the Navy come to help.”
For Sailors assigned to NRD Dallas, participating in the parade and associated activities was a meaningful way to engage with and work alongside members of the local community.
“For me, volunteering in this event was beneficial and meaningful for a variety of reasons,” said Chief Navy Counselor Tony Murphy, director of community outreach at NRD Dallas, and volunteer organizer for the event. “For one, we get to actively participate in an event that pays tribute to a man that worked so hard for positive change in America.”
“Also, we get to be out in the community that we serve,” continued Murphy. “We’re out here with the citizens of Dallas, meeting people in the community, and showing them that as Sailors, we have a vested interest, and deep ties in the local community.”
