KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan and coalition forces searched compounds Tuesday night, July 7, in Ghazni province in an effort to disrupt a key Haqqani commander's attacks on coalition bases, assassination attempts of Afghan government officials, and the flow of foreign fighters and weapons into the region.
The combined force assaulted three compounds, about 50 kilometers south of the city of Ghazni, after receiving intelligence indicating militant activity at these locations. During the operation the force engaged and killed several armed enemy combatants and found grenades and rifles. At another compound, the force engaged an individual who did not comply with the forces' instructions to stop moving toward them. During this engagement, a ricocheting round killed a civilian female. The force searched the compounds without further incident, detaining six suspected militants
The Haqqani network remains one of the most lethal Taliban organizations operating out of Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Area. Haqqani leaders conduct operations in conjunction with other Islamic militant groups with similar goals and interests. The network focuses operations against the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Afghan national security forces, and seeks to expel coalition and NATO forces from Afghanistan to maintain its influence in eastern provinces.
