Story by 2nd Lt. Charlotte Dennis

    Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

There were two separate fires aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Wednesday evening.

The cause of the fires were downed power-lines due to high winds. The fires were first reported at approximately 7 p.m. The first fire was located near Cristianitos Road, the second near Basilone Road and Cristianitos. Both fires were less than an acre in size.

Due to the location of the fires, all four lanes of Interstate Highway 5 were closed by 7:30 p.m. and reopened by 9 p.m. Camp Pendleton Fire Department and the Orange County Fire Authority partnered to share in resources, both providing crewmembers, fire trucks, and more to contain these fires and open I-5 once again.

CPFD and OCFA’s partnership lead to an impressive response time, clearing one area within three hours, and the other within four. CPFD monitored both areas throughout the night. No injuries were reported and all structures were safe.

The training that these individuals do every day, to include interoperability exercises between the two departments, laid the foundation for the success they had in putting out last night’s fires.
