PENSACOLA, Fla. – Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Corry Station completed the pilot of a new Cryptologic Antenna Maintenance Course onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola Corry Station, Pensacola, Florida, Feb. 3.
The new course provides Navy cryptologic technician (maintenance) Sailors, including new-accessions, seasoned fleet returnees, and Coast Guard electronics technicians, with the fundamental knowledge and foundation necessary to maintain and preserve all cryptologic antennas across the fleet providing assurance to warfighters of peak performance by shipboard cryptologic systems performing early warning, signal analysis, and threat detection.
"This course represents a significant change from the previous version," stated Cryptologic Technician (Maintenance) 1st Class Jonathan Toune, a Ship’s Signal Exploitation Equipment (SSEE) Increment “E” Maintenance Course instructor at IWTC Corry Station. "Our technicians previously received 10 days of antenna maintenance troubleshooting during the SSEE Inc. ‘E’ Maintenance course, but, now they are receiving skills required to install, test, and maintain antennas specific to all ship’s signal exploitation equipment systems in our fleet."
The updated Cryptologic Antenna Maintenance Course teaches basic skills from weatherization to troubleshooting supporting assignments to any afloat cryptologic platform or fleet electronic support command.
"I believe this course will save the Navy money," said Charles Knutzen, the Cryptologic Antenna Maintenance Course supervisor at IWTC Corry Station. “We need to make sure our technicians have the skills to personally maintain their antennas and rely less on technical support."
The course familiarizes trainees with proper safety, radio frequency theory, direction-finding theory, antennas, specialized tools and uses, importance of proper weatherization, and bonding and grounding. With the foundation established in these topics, the trainee will then be able to perform a pre-installation check out, or PICO, install an antenna, and prevent corrosion at the connection points.
"This course was challenging, yet very informative," shared Cryptologic Technician (Maintenance) 2nd Class Jordan Briggs, a student assigned to the guided missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63). “I feel prepared for any situation I may encounter in the fleet.”
"This course is the culmination of years of work and countless man-hours from training managers, instructional support specialists, instructors at the schoolhouse, and input from the fleet to tailor the individual learning objectives to meet the needs of new Sailors assigned to the CTM rating," shared Master Chief Cryptologic Technician (Maintenance) Jim Theis, CTM rating training manager at the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT).
"Sailors receiving this new course will be delivered to the fleet armed with the most up-to-date skill sets available to perform their jobs at a high level," said Cmdr. Zachary McKeehan, commanding officer of IWTC Corry Station. "I'm very proud of our civilians, Sailors and contractors that contributed to this process, and know that IWTC Corry Station will continue to provide the fleet with the best training in the Navy."
IWTC Corry Station is a part of the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT). With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past three years.
