The Kirtland Air Force Base Tax Center held a ribbon cutting ceremony Feb. 4, 2020, to celebrate the opening of the center for the 2019 tax season.
Over 25 certified volunteers are ready to help eligible service members and retirees with tax services. All volunteers have to take tests prepared by the IRS in order to be qualified to volunteer at the tax center.
“It’s pretty extensive,” said Al Collie, Kirtland Tax Center site coordinator. “We [coordinators and preparers] take four tests that are IRS prepared.”
Some of the volunteers at the Tax Center have been volunteering for over 20 years.
“I’m retired Air Force,” said Collie. “I just like the idea of helping the active duty folks and especially retirees.”
According to U.S. Air Force Capt. Michael Bruzik, Kirtland AFB Tax Center installation executive, the Tax Center helped people save $153,961 in tax-prep fees and processed $1.2 million in tax returns last year.
“I have to give a lot of credit to the volunteers because they do most of the heavy lifting once the season gets started,” said Bruzik.
The tax center is open until April 15, but Bruzik highly recommends that people come in to file taxes before then.
“We are really proud of the support we are able to give to the young military members,” said Collie.
The tax center is open Tuesday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., by appointment and on a walk-in basis.
Appointments can be made by calling the Tax Center during business hours at 505-853-1700.
