FORT BENNING, Ga. — The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit will host a historical marker dedication ceremony for Hook Range and the Round House on February 6, 2020 at 10 a.m. at the Hook Range Complex. The ceremony, complete with historic uniforms, will include top leadership from both the USAMU and the Maneuver Center of Excellence.
The Round House was built in 1938 and has served as a hunting lodge, Officers’ Club Annex and meeting hall for the USAMU. It survives as a local emblem from the World War II era and of the founding and growth of the USAMU.
Over the decades, Hook Range and the Round House have entertained a number of famous generals including General George Patton and General Omar Bradley. It also hosted the 1960 Shotgun Olympic Trials. In 1967, the location was used in a scene featuring John Wayne in the movie, The Green Berets.
To this day, Hook Range and the Round House are used for collegiate shotgun training, Centers of Influence demonstrations/visits, and the annual Benning Shogun Open. This is all in addition to being the home for the USAMU’s Shotgun Team to train and prepare for national- and world-level competitions in both the trap and skeet disciplines.
