GREAT LAKES, Ill. (February 4, 2020) – Navy installations across the country are participating in an annual two-week force protection exercise, Feb. 3-14.
Exercise Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain 2020 is conducted by Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command and Commander, Navy Installations Command on all Navy installations in the continental U.S., including Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL).
On Feb. 4, the NSGL installation training team (ITT), led by Installation Training Officer Mark Wegge, conducted an active shooter drill that evaluated response, containment and recovery operations with a unified incident command post that included security, fire, and medical personnel. Simulated protestors chanted outside NSGL’s main gate and a simulated active shooter was quickly neutralized by Navy Security Forces (NSF) at NSGL’s Nunn Beach.
“Exercises like Exercise Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain 2020 give us the opportunity to study our plans and response procedures and continuously improve them in regard to evolving threats,” said NSGL Commanding Officer Capt. Ray Leung.
Leung notified local community leaders in advance to let them know that there may be increased traffic or sirens during the exercise.
“We are responsible for the safety and security of our people, equipment and the base,” said NSGL Executive Officer Cmdr. Ken Williams. “We also want to be a good neighbor to the surrounding communities.”
“Exercising our personnel realistically enhances our readiness,” said Wegge. “This exercise was designed to test our ability to coordinate our emergency response.”
Exercise Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain 2020 is not in response to any specific threat, but is a regularly scheduled exercise.
