Tax season is here! Everyone is geared up and ready to find out what they are getting back or possibly what they owe. Thankfully, the process is made easier thanks to our Marines at the Tax Center who are available to help personnel at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, North Carolina, and even those in the surrounding areas.
“Many people think we only prepare simple returns, but we’re actually capable of handling most situations that taxpayers will see,” said Capt. Matt Bosakowski, officer in charge of the MCAS Cherry Point Tax Center. “Although some situations are out of scope for us, we encourage everyone to at least call us to see if we can help.”
While the ease of online tax assistance is tempting, it comes at a price, but for all active-duty, reserve, retired military and dependents, the option is open to come to the Tax Center at MCAS Cherry Point to get assistance on all their tax related needs, free of charge. So to everyone and anyone who falls under any one of those categories, no matter how complicated the taxes, no matter how much paperwork and tax-related forms they need assistance with, the MCAS Cherry Point Tax Center is equipped to help with almost all customer needs.
“We save people a bunch of money,” said Lance Cpl. Madison Andrews, a field radio operator assigned to Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 currently assigned to the MCAS Cherry Point Tax Center as a tax preparer. “They can come here and get their taxes done for free instead of having to go through other sources where they can end up paying hundreds of dollars to have someone else do their taxes.”
All of the Marines at the Tax Center have received official certifications from the Internal Revenue Service for military and advanced tax assistance after attending a week long course located at Camp Johnson, North Carolina, and passed exams detailing all of the unique tax situations we will throw at them this year, including unique rental situations and multi-state tax assistance needs that most Marines run into. Even after the course, they continued training up until they opened on January 30, 2020.
“We’re now able to use our knowledge, everything that we’ve been studying for, so we are able to do taxes without any hiccups,” said Andrews. “Everyone can go to anyone else if they run into something they haven’t seen before or if help is needed.”
The MCAS Cherry Point Tax Center is located at the back of Bldg. 298 on the second deck, directly next to the back entrance of the Installation Personnel Administration Center. Unfortunately for some, this may be a little harder to access due to any personal restrictions or disabilities. Due to this, Marines at the Tax Center urge any persons who cannot meet them on the second deck please call ahead, because no matter what the limitation, our Marines are still here for you. Since the Marines want to be able to reach everyone possible, they have stated they would be more than eager to meet anyone needing extra assistance at either the library or a separate location on the first deck. You can reach the MCAS Cherry Point Tax Center to arrange this ahead of time at (252) 466-2001.
“I want to be able to help the Marines, well, everyone on base,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Landis, the staff noncommissioned officer in charge of the MCAS Cherry Point Tax Center. “To be able to save over 100,000 dollars in taxes would be awesome.”
The MCAS Cherry Point Tax Center is open on a walk-in basis, Monday – Friday from 0800 – 1530. Appointments can also be set for Saturdays at the discretion of the Tax Center.
