KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan national security forces, assisted by coalition forces, discovered a large weapons cache in Herat province in the early morning hours of July 11.

The combined elements were conducting a search of a known militant compound in support of the security and stability of Afghanistan, when they discovered the cache.

The cache contained Russian-made rocket-propelled grenades, hand grenades, recoilless rifles and ammunition, improvised explosive device-making materials, including blocks of trinitrotoluene, detonation cord and blasting caps among others.

The combined force destroyed the cache in place after ensuring there were no non-combatants in the area.

Three militant fighters were also detained by the Afghan forces without incident.

There were no Afghan, coalition force, or non-combatant casualties as a result of the operation.
