Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain won the fiscal year 2019 Retention Excellence Award Jan. 20.

The annual award recognizes commands that have met or surpassed the percentage guidelines established for retention by the chief of naval operations.

In determining the award, retention rates were separated into four different zones: A, B and C. NSA Bahrain finished with a 75 percent retention rate in zone A, 78 percent in zone B, 95 percent in zone C and a one percent attrition rate in zone A.

The leading petty officer of NSA Bahrain’s command career counselor office, Navy Counselor 1st Class Michelle Bolden, believes that this success is owed to both the triad and her team.

“This success happened thanks to a supportive chain of command and a passionate and capable career development team,” said Bolden.

There are four command career counselors and 26 departmental and divisional collateral duty counselors at NSA Bahrain. Together, they lead a one-stop shop to address all needs concerning reenlistment, order negotiations, officer medical enlistment, officer candidate school packages, limited duty officer packages and more. The team primarily caters to enlisted service members, but officers can benefit from their transition program.

“It is both challenging and rewarding to support 700 Sailors on base,” said Bolden. “We support tenant commands and service members in the AOR, including enlisted members outside of Bahrain; both Navy Sailors and Marines,” said Bolden.

Regardless of the challenge, NSA Bahrain’s career counselors feel highly motivated and enjoy their work. Their enthusiasm is reflected on their performance.

“The work is absolutely fulfilling… gives us the opportunity to help Sailors. We all have a passion to help Sailors make career decisions,” said Bolden.
