Team Mildenhall Airmen from the 100th Security Forces Squadron military working dog unit and Ministry of Defence policemen volunteered at a police cadets open day in Mildenhall, England, Feb. 8, 2020.
During the event, the 100th SFS military working dog handlers performed a demonstration of their capabilities, and answered questions from children interested in joining the cadets.
“The purpose of the open day was to encourage more children around Mildenhall to join the police cadets,” said Samantha Hallatt, Suffolk Police Cadet Coordinator. “It’s an opportunity for the children to become good citizens, deter from crime and encourage them to look at a career in the police force.”
The cadets are provided development and training programs to promote positive leadership and a practical interest in policing.
“The importance of us coming out to the event is to show our support,” said Tech Sgt. Melissa Burns 100th SFS military working dog kennel master. “Going to the cadets’ open house helps us show and explain part of what law enforcement can do and the capabilities of our military working dog team.”
Aside from giving the cadets and visitors an insight to the 100th SFS military working dogs and MOD Police, the Mildenhall Airmen solidified relations with the local community.
“Having RAF Mildenhall Airmen at the open day shows good community relations between the base and the local community,” said Natalie Murphy RAF Mildenhall community relations advisor. “It is fantastic that the 100th SFS are showcasing their military working dogs because there is a link between them and the cadets, and the same with the MOD Police. It’s important that they went as well to show the children another side of the police force.”
