Over 600 personnel recently competed in the U.S. Army Human Resources Command (HRC) Healthy Heroes campaign to integrate holistic living practices within their everyday lives.

Leaders across the five HRC directorates encouraged Soldiers and Department of the Army civilians to maximize self-improvement by promoting fitness and resiliency activities to strengthen the mind, body, and spirit.

Maj. Gen. Joe Calloway, commanding general, HRC, spoke about the importance of the Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) program.

“Holistic health is actually an approach to life. The integrated approach to H2F improves individual wellness and ultimately improves the overall health within this command. Today we are recognizing all of the people who made this program a success,” said Calloway.

Classes on nutrition, health, teamwork, meditation, guided yoga and financial readiness were available and allowed participants to accumulate points.

After the campaign, the Soldiers and DA civilians with the most points won gift cards, access to the commanding general’s parking spot, and time off awards.

Although receiving points and prizes generated motivation and competition, the primary focus was educating the workforce on the benefits of incorporating holistic health practices into their everyday lives.

Maj. Jessica Beard, headquarters and headquarters company commander, explained what senior leaders were aiming for when creating the various programs for H2F participants.

“Our continual goal is promoting holistic health that involves the non-physical elements and physical exercise,” said Beard.

Sgt. 1st Class Antoinette Walker, Reserve Personnel Management Directorate, was the top military winner.

Walker shared her thoughts on the program and how it was life-changing for her.

Each day during the campaign, Walker could be seen walking outside of the HRC headquarters with the U.S. flag gracefully flowing in the wind. She was oftentimes joined by others who also provided encouragement.

“I was experiencing a rough time getting motivated since I just turned 50 years old. Then Healthy Heroes launched and it was exactly what I needed to push myself out of my comfort zone.”

The DA civilian winner, Sara Lott, Enlisted Personnel Management Directorate, shared how meditating every morning and embracing holistic health has improved her confidence and motivated her to achieve new goals.

“I choose self-development goals each year, and this year I will embark on the Gemstone and Defense Civilian Emerging Leaders Program (DCELP),” said Lott.

Lott stated, “My supervisor, Marcus Williams, Chief Branch Integrator Specialist (CBIS), encouraged me to participate in Healthy Heroes and it unquestionably increased my morale.”

Walker and Lott were recognized by Calloway and Command Sgt. Maj. Lynice Thorpe-Noel respectively for their efforts.

The Army continues to improve programs and policies to assist commanders in strengthening Soldiers and civilians through enhancing personal resilience. Resilience is an important component of personal readiness and effective leadership.
