GULF OF ADEN – The guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) responded to a call from a distressed merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden on Feb. 11.
Normandy responded to the distress call and quickly maneuvered to close the distance to the vessel in need.
An MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter, assigned to the “Proud Warriors” of Maritime Strike Squadron 72, which is embarked on Normandy, conducted a medical evacuation for an injured mariner.
“This is a testament to the professionalism and flexibility of our team,” said Capt. Chris Stone, Normandy’s commanding officer. “It is our obligation to render assistance to mariners in need of aid, which we did expeditiously and professionally.”
The guided-missile destroyer USS Farragut (DDG 99), along with other nearby vessels supported the operation by supplying fuel for the MH-60R helicopter. The patient was then flown to a medical facility for treatment.
Normandy, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations as part of a scheduled deployment.
