Upon his retirement from Federal Service in 2012, Vincent J. Faggioli, former command counsel for Army Materiel Command, left an enduring legacy and example based on his passion for the law, the Army and service to the nation.
“I love the law, because in the law we see the foundation of our freedoms, of our rights, and of our ability to be safe,” said Faggioli in 2012, reflecting on his combined 41 years of military and civilian service.
In addition to receiving multiple military and civilian awards recognizing excellence throughout his career, Faggioli also had an award named in his honor. The Vincent J. Faggioli Army Materiel Command Achievement Award is given to an individual from an AMC field office that offers outstanding legal support. Katherine MacKenzie, the 2014 recipient of the award, credited Faggioli as a mentor to many within the AMC legal community, saying he “epitomized the role of the government attorney- advisor.”
Faggioli achieved an impressive academic record, having earned five degrees including a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and a Juris Doctor from The University of Utah, two Master of Law degrees from The George Washington University, and a Master of Arts in Public Administration from Central Michigan University.
After receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1971, Faggioli started his military career as a platoon leader and executive officer assigned to 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. It was at this station Faggioli recognized his love for law and decided to pursue the field.
Upon completion of law school in 1978, Faggioli was assigned to the Judge Advocate General Corps where he served in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility, including a staff judge advocate, international law treaty advisor, and special counsel to Frank Hunger, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division.
Toward the end of his military career, Faggioli worked overseas as the judge advocate for both U.N. Command and U.S. Forces in Seoul, South Korea, and U.S. European Command in Stuttgart, Germany.
Faggioli retired from the U.S Army in 2001 as a full colonel and continued government service as an attorney for 14 years.
Faggioli was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in 2007 and began his tenure at AMC as deputy command counsel. He assumed the position of command counsel two years later where his main responsibilities were to advise the commanding general, staff and major subordinate commands on all legal matters pertaining to all fields of law and regulations for AMC’s worldwide, multi-billion dollar activities.
In 2012, Faggioli received the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Service for his service as AMC command counsel.
“Since being deputy command counsel and command counsel for AMC, I have had the opportunity to practice all I have learned about the law and leadership,” said Faggioli.
Vincent J. Faggioli passed away on October 2, 2018, at the age of 71. He is regarded as living a life of constant learning, serving others, and excelling in everything he did.
His military and civilian awards include the U.S Army Legion of Merit, Defense Superior Service Medal, U.S Army Distinguished Service Medal, Superior Civilian Service Award, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Spirit of Arrowhead Award for Outstanding Legal Leadership; Honolulu Engineer District, Pacific Ocean Division Corps of Engineers Leader of the Year, Meritorious Civilian Service Award, and the U.S. Army Army Corps of Engineers Bronze DeFleury Award.
Faggioli will be posthumously inducted into the AMC Hall of Fame during a ceremony March 10 at AMC headquarters at Redstone Arsenal.
